COUGARS TOP GORDON STATE, 15-9, BEHIND BIG DAY AT THE PLATE
BARNESVILLE, Ga. — Cleveland State used a steady offensive performance to earn a 15–9 road win over Gordon State on Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by a standout showing from Nolan Sergeant, who hit for the cycle.
Sergeant finished the day 5-for-5 with five runs scored and five RBI, recording a double, triple, and two home runs as part of a lineup that scored in seven different innings. The center fielder reached base in all five plate appearances and accounted for a third of Cleveland State's runs.
The Cougars jumped out early, scoring six runs in the first inning and adding five more in the second to build an early cushion. Cleveland State totaled 12 hits and nine walks, keeping pressure on Gordon State throughout the game.
"We had good at-bats up and down the lineup and did a nice job of taking what was there," said head coach Aaron Bryant. "It's early in the year, but today was a good step as we continue to settle in and learn about this team."
Additional offensive contributions came from Evan Leonard, who went 2-for-5 with two RBI, along with RBI hits from Nelson McKnight, Jon Jon Read, Nate Severance, and Samuel Formby.
On the mound, Anthony Biondo picked up the win with 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run while striking out three. Torrey Robinson closed out the final three innings to earn the save, recording six strikeouts.
Gordon State remained competitive with several multi-run innings, but the Cougars maintained control after the strong start and finished off the non-conference victory.
