The baseball team took two of three games tis weekend against Columbia State. They would seep the doublheader on Thursday, but lose the nine inning game on Friday.
Cougars Sweep Columbia State in Doubleheader at Cougar Field
Cleveland State baseball earned a conference doubleheader sweep of Columbia State Community College on Thursday at Cougar Field, winning 5–4 in 10 innings in Game 1 before closing the day with a 3–2 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Cleveland State 5, Columbia State 4 (10 innings)
The opener ended in dramatic fashion as Nate Severance crushed a walk-off home run in the 10th inning, lifting the Cougars to a 5–4 win. Owen Phillips also homered earlier in the game as Cleveland State stayed within striking distance throughout.
On the mound, Max Owens delivered a strong start, working 7.2 innings and allowing four runs while striking out eight. Torrey Robinson earned the win in relief with two scoreless innings to seal the extra-inning victory.
Game 2: Cleveland State 3, Columbia State 2
Cleveland State completed the sweep behind strong pitching and timely offense in the nightcap. Hank Adams provided the difference with a solo home run, while Nolan Sergeant and Kwade Carver each collected multiple hits.
Parker Coe was dominant, tossing a complete game and striking out 11 while allowing just two runs on three hits.
Head Coach Aaron Bryant praised his team's resilience and pitching depth following the sweep.
"That was a tough doubleheader, and I thought our guys handled it extremely well," Bryant said. "Severance came through in a huge moment, Max and Parker gave us great starts, and the bullpen did its job when we needed it."
Columbia State Edges Cleveland State in Extra Innings
Cleveland State Community College built an early cushion but couldn't hold off a late push, as Columbia State claimed a 6–5 win in 10 innings Friday afternoon at Cougar Field.
The Cougars set the tone early, erupting for four runs in the first inning and adding another in the fourth to take a 5–1 lead. Cleveland State finished the day with 11 hits, consistently putting pressure on Columbia State pitching.
Offensively, Jaxon Humble led the way with a 3-for-5 performance, an RBI, and two stolen bases. Jon Jon Read went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Owen Phillips drove in a run and added a stolen base. Nate Severance also chipped in with a hit and a run scored as the Cougars kept traffic on the bases throughout the afternoon.
On the mound, Braden Suggs delivered a standout start, striking out 14 batters over 7.1 innings while allowing just three runs (two earned). The Cleveland State bullpen worked into extra innings, but Columbia State tied the game late before pushing across the decisive run in the 10th inning.
Despite the setback, head coach Aaron Bryant pointed to the team's overall play and competitiveness.
"We played good baseball for most of the day and got a strong outing on the mound," Bryant said. "It's about finishing late, and that's where we'll keep getting better."
Cleveland State will look to respond next week, returning to action Friday and Saturday with a conference series against Pellissippi State.
