The No. 4 Cougars (33-17) were upended by No. 5 Volunteer State by a score of 8-4.
"Jake Rogers suffered the loss, but pitched well," Cleveland State coach Mike Policastro said.
"Our inability to make routine plays gave them three unearned runs."
The Cougars will play No. 8 Southwest Tennessee today at 2 p.m. ET in the loser's bracket, while Volunteer State will play No. 1 Dyersburg State at 8 p.m. ET.
According to the coach, Cleveland State's offense was led by John Sharpe, who had four hits, and Sean McDermott, who had two solo home runs.
