The Cougars (24-10, 9-7) cranked out 12 hits in their 10-3 win over the Pioneers (21-13, 6-10).
"Hooper Mills picked up the win, throwing seven innings with three runs, one earned, and eight strike outs," Cleveland State coach Mike Policastro said.
"Elijah Haynie and Walker Malone threw in the eighth and ninth innings, giving up no hits."
The Cougars and Pioneers play in a doubleheader today at 1 and 3 p.m.
Cleveland State scored four runs in the top of the third, while Volunteer State picked up one before the inning was closed out.
The Cougars held the Pioneers off the board in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and scored one run in both the fifth and sixth.
Both teams added two runs to the scoreboard in the seventh, with Cleveland State taking an 8-3 lead into the eighth. There, they picked up their final two runs of the game.
"Our offense was led by Sean McDermott, who had three hits and three RBIs, and Brandon Mason with two hits and two runs. Devon Gardner had two hits with three RBIs with a two-run triple and solo homerun. John Hennen added a solo homerun," Policastro detailed.
Jordan Ransom and Hagan Kennedy also had an RBI in Friday's game.
