Cleveland State took Piedmont College’s JV team to task Monday afternoon, defeating them 12-2 in seven innings.

"We played well today in the win. Ryan Lloyd did a good job in his start going 5 innings. Our offense continued to be able to put up runs," head coach Mike Policastro said.
"We were able to get a lot of guys at bats today. I was happy to see Devon Gardner have good at bats resulting in a two-run home run. Hopefully we can continue to play well going into conference play this weekend at Roane State."
Lloyd gave up only three hits and one run, while striking out seven batters in five innings to get the win.
After one inning, the Cougars had taken a 1-0 lead. That lead turned into a 10-0 lead after the team scored five runs in the third and four runs in the fourth inning.
Piedmont answered with a run of their own in the fifth inning, but the Cougars drove in two more runners in the sixth to take a 12-1 lead. Piedmonts final run of the game came in the seventh inning.
Gardner hit his two-run homer in the bottom of the third, and ultimately accounted for four RBI after going 2-for-3 at the plate. Tyler Qualls went 2-for-3 at the plate for three RBI and hit a double. Billy Brand and Sean Coakley also had doubles in the game.
Trent Elliot, Trey Vanderpool and Coakley each had a RBI in the game.
The Cougars' batting average is currently .367, with a team slugging percentage of .552.
Cleveland State travels to Roane State this weekend for their first conference game of the season.
