EMERSON, Ga. – It only took Cleveland State eight hits to drive in 10 runs in Wednesday's game against Bryant & Stratton College (Va.). At the end of a five inning, run-ruled game, the Cougars (3-1) left the LakePoint Complex with a 10-0 win to add to the books.
"We continued to put quality at bats together today in scoring," Cleveland State head coach Mike Policastro said.
The Cougars' bats, who are currently averaging .439, weren't the only ones bolstering the team. Pitcher Brandon Thompson got the win after striking out six and giving up no hits. Jared McDonald and Walker Malone each came in for an inning and held on to the shutout.
"Brandon Thompson was efficient in his three innings of work, with the bullpen completing the shutout," Policastro commented.
Leadoff hitter Jordan Ransom doubled to start the first inning and two batters later, Sean McDermott tripled to bring Ransom in. McDermott has a .625 batting average Devin Gardner reached first on a fielder's choice and McDermott reached home for the second run.
The Cougars lit up the scoreboard in the third inning, where they scored eight runs off five hits. Gardner had two RBI, while John Sharpe, Hagan Kennedy, John Anderson, Ransom and John Hennen each had one RBI. Kennedy also scored on a wild pitch. Ransom, who is currently batting .533, was 3-for-3 at the plate and Kennedy went 2-for-2 and is batting .600 through four games.
Cleveland State's series against Vincennes University this weekend has been changed up a bit. The Cougars will play a doubleheader on Friday, with the first game at noon and then play a single game on Saturday at noon.
