LADY COUGAR SOFTBALL SPLITS SEASON OPENER
Cleveland State softball opened their 2015 season on a brisk Friday afternoon. The result was a split of the doubleheader with Gadsden State. Gadsden would take the first game by a 6-1 score, but the Lady Cougars would take the nightcap 4-2.
The ladies had to work through some first game jitters as well as battling with cold. They would strand five baserunners in scoring position. "We had a hard time stringing hits together when runners were on," noted Head Coach Katie Willingham.
The Lady Cougars scored their lone run in the first game in the bottom of the seventh. Tori Roberts would lead off with a walk. After a sacrifice and single, Roberts would score from third on a single by Hannah Godfrey.
Allison Conley took the loss in the circle as she went 5 2/3 innings surrendering seven hits, three earned runs with four strikeouts and 1 walk.
In the second game, Cleveland would overcome a 1-0 deficit in the 3rd inning when Godfrey and Miranda Smith would reach base and both score on singles by Jennifer Kern and Courtni Hammers. They would add insurance in the 4th on a two run double by Smith.
Kara Headrick would earn the victory on a complete game. She gave up six hits and one earned run. She would strike out one batter and walk three.
For the afternoon, Smith would have three hits and 2 RBIs. Godfrey, Roberts, and Kern each finished with two hits on the day.
