Cougar softball kept their conference record even at 2-2 with a split of a doubleheader with Jackon State on Sunday afternoon. The ladies won the first game on a walkoff single 5-4 before dropping the second game 6-1. The squad's overall record stands at 3-9.
In the first game, the Cougars trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the seenth. Laila Perry would lead off with a single, and come around and score on a sacrifice fly by Destini Jensen. Milan Pemberton would score on a wild pitch to tie the game after reaching on a walk. Mylee Howard would single, and score the winning run on a two-out sngle by Lily Griffits.
The Cougars had seven hits in the first game with Perry and Griffits each belting out two singles. Jensen would have two RBIs in the game with Griffits driving in the winning run.
Reagan Frakes would get the win as she pitched the final two innings. She surrendered one hit with no earned runs and one strikeout. Jenny Beth Freeman went the first five innings, surrendering three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
In the second game, Jackson struck for single runs in the first two innings and never trailed in the game. The Cougars managed six hits in the game with no one registering multiple hits in the contest. Jayla Young and Jensen each had a double.
Sierra Howard toook the loss as she surrendered three earned runs on five hits in five innings of work. She had four strikeouts and four walks in the game. Frakes pitched the final two innings allowing one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts.
The softball team's next game is scheduled for March 14 when they host Volunteer State in a conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 1pm EDT.
