Cleveland State softball won their first game of the young season as they traveled to Oxford(AL) for the Juco Extravaganza at Chocolocco Park. In their first game of the day, they scored a run in the top of the seventh to win 6-5 over Snead State. In their second game, they lost a 5-0 game to Central Alabama. The squad's record currently stands at 1-5 on the season.
In the game against Snead, the Cougars held a 5-2 lead only to see Snead come bacck with two runs in the fifth and single run in the sixth to tie the score. A two-out double by Destini Jensen scored Suki Williams from first base for the winning score.
The team had 11 hits in the game led by Gisele Tankersley with two doubles and a single as well as 2 RBIs. Milan Pemberton, Heidi Johnson, and Jensen each had two hits in the game. Pemberton had two singles while Johnson had a double and a single to drive in three runs. Zensen had a single to go with her tie-breaking double. Ella Blansit also had a double in the contest.
Jayla Young took the win in the circle for the team. She surrendered two earned runs on four hits. She walked eight and had four strikeouts.
In the game versus Central Alabama, the team mangaed only five hits with no one with multiple hits. Tankersley, Pemberton, Johnson, Blansit, and Mylee Howard each had a single in the game.
Tankersley took the loss as she surrendered no earned runs on seven hits in six innings. She walked two batters and had no strikeouts. Sierra Howard worked one inning, striking out one batter with no hits.
The team will be on the road as they will face Calhoun CC (AL) in a doubleheader Tuesday. They will be home next weekend as they start conference action on Friday against Columbia State and Jackson State on Saturday. Game time Friday is set for 2pm EST.
