Cougar Softball Splits with Walters State
Cleveland State softball ended the regular season with a home doubleheader split vs Walters State,
winning game one 6-4 and losing in the nightcap 12-2 in five innings.
With a conference record of 12-16 and an overall mark of 16-24 the Cougars are locked in to a play-in
game vs Southwest scheduled to be played on Friday May 2 on the campus of Chattanooga State.
Currently the game start time is scheduled at 1:30 p.m. EST.
Game One
Sierra Howard went the distance in the 6-4 win claiming her eighth victory of the season as the Cougars
scored two in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. Down by one, Heidi Johnson hit a leadoff
homerun for Cleveland State and Layla Pettigrew blasted a run scoring double plating Lilly Griffitts
who had been hit by a pitch.
In the second inning, Johnson added to the scoring coming home on a Walters error while Brooklyn
Deaver walked and scored on a triple by Milan Pemberton. Pemberton scored the final run of the
inning scoring on a groundout off the bat of Griffitts.
The Cougars scored their final run in the sixth inning. All total, Cleveland State had six hits on the
game, one each from Johnson, Desiree Nance, Ava Layne, Pettigrew, Carissa Montgomery and
Pemberton.
Game Two
In game two's 12-2 loss, the Cougars managed just three hits, a single by Howard, a double by
Montgomery and a two-run homerun from Taylor Hancock. Hancock ended the regular season with a
team leading eight homeruns.
