Cougar Softball Wins Doubleheader vs Roane State
Cleveland State softball busted back into the win column on Friday, April 18 winning a doubleheader
with come from behind 4-3 and 9-8 wins. The wins ended a Cougar seven-game losing streak having lost
the previous two games to Chattanooga State.
The Cougars sit in seventh place in the TCCAA with a conference record of 11-15 and an overall
mark of 15-23.
Game One
Down 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cougars sent eight players to the plate scoring
four runs to take a 4-2 lead. Singles by Lilly Griffitts, Desiree Nance, Ava Layne and Layla Pettigrew
led to the first two runs while the final runs came from a sacrifice fly off the bat of Carissa Montgomery
and an RBI single from Milan Pemberton.
Sierra Howard pitched the distance for her seventh win of the season. In the 4-3 win, Cleveland State
had eight hits in the game, two each by Griffitts and Layne while Nance, Pettigrew, Montgomery and
Pemberton each had one.
Game Two
In game two the Cougars fell behind quick again as Roane scored two in the first to take a 2-0 lead.
Cleveland State tied the score in the third inning plating two on an error after a double by Pemberton
and a single from Heidi Johnson. Both teams scored a run in the fourth as Brooklyn Deaver blasted a
homerun for Cleveland State's run. Roane then took a two-run lead 5-3 scoring two in the fifth.
The Cougars roared back in their half of the fifth scoring four runs as Layne hit a three-run homer
following a single from Griffitts and a double by Nance. Later in the inning, Montgomery doubled and
came home to score on a single from Deaver. In the sixth, Johnson doubled and was driven home by
Layne giving the Cougars an 8-5 lead going into the top of the seventh.
Roane battled back in the seventh scoring three runs to knot the score at eight. The tie was short
lived as the Cougars scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh when Pettigrew doubled and
scored when Taylor Hancock lashed a single into left for the Cleveland State 9-8 win.
What's Next
The Cougars are set to finish the regular season with a home doubleheader on Saturday, April 26 vs
Walters State with game times scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m. EST. Home games are played on the
campus of Cleveland State with an admission charge of $8 per person. There is no charge for
Cleveland State student, staff, faculty and administrators.
