Golf wrapped up its regular season at the Phoenix Invitational, hosted by Cumberland University. The 13-team tournament, played at Old Hickory Country Club in Old Hickory, TN, primarily consisted of NAIA schools with the strongest team in the field being William Carey University, currently ranked 10th in the country.
Colbe Cagle led the way for the Cougars in round one with a 75, the lowest round of the tournament for CSCC. Their first round team score of 323 was 13th, but the Cougars were within nine strokes of the next three teams. Host school, Cumberland University, led with a 289. Seth Ward and Jared Thomas posted the next best scores for Cleveland State with an 80 and 81 respectively.
The team failed to improve in the second round finishing with a 330 and a tournament total of 653, once again in 13th place. "The greens were very fast and firm, and the guys struggled to adjust," said head coach Miles Moseley. "Our short game really hurt us this week." Cagle's 80 was once again the low score of the round for the Cougars with Thomas shooting an 81 and Ward shooting an 82.
The tournament was won by Martin Methodist College with a team total of 584 followed closely by William Carey University and Campbellsville University who tied for 2nd with a 591.
"I'm very disappointed in our scores," added Moseley. "The guys have worked way too hard to get this poor of a result, so that's on me. We'll shake it up over the next two weeks as we prepare for post season."
The golf team will return to competition April 23-24 at the NJCAA District J Championship which will be played at Chateau Elan Golf Club in Braselton, GA.
