Cougars Sweep Dyersburg State, Michael Policastro Inducted into TCCAA Hall of Fame and Retires
A Hall of Fame induction ceremony also acted as a retirement announcement for Michael Policastro before Cleveland State hosted Dyersburg State in their final home games of the season.
Policastro, the former Cleveland State head baseball coach and current Athletic Director, was inducted into the TCCAA Hall of Fame before the first pitch of the series with him and his colleagues announcing his retirement as AD.
The Cougars lost to Dyersburg State in the TCCAA Region 7 championship last season in Policastro's final game as head coach, but swept the Eagles this time around in front of the home crowd. Each Cougars starter pitched a complete game.
The teams played a double header Thursday to start the series with Cleveland State (26-20, 16-11) winning each game by a run.
Turner Junkins (6-4) pitched a complete game allowing two earned runs on six hits while striking out six and walking three earning the game one victory.
Right fielder Caleb Gibson went 3-3 scoring twice and doubling. Designated hitter Ty Denton went 2-3 scoring the team's other run in the game while also hitting a double.
Max Owens (5-3) allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out six and not walking a batter in his complete game win in the second game of the double header.
The Eagles (11-28, 3-22) lone run came on a solo homer off the bat of shortstop Holden Warmath to lead off the game.
Cleveland State scored their two runs in the fourth inning when third baseman Evan Goins singled home second baseman Brogan Jones, then Gibson hit a sacrifice fly to plate first baseman Nelson Mcknight.
After the sophomores were recognized before the final home game of the season, Cleveland State went on to shutout the Eagles 7-0 in game three.
Adam Baker (2-2) allowed three hits while striking out nine and not walking a batter.
Goins went 2-3 in the game driving in three runs, scoring a run and doubling. Gipson also doubled and drove in a run.
Cleveland State hits the road for their final four games of the season. Monday they face Carson Newman with first pitch scheduled for noon before going to Walters State Thursday and Friday for a three-game series.
